In 1980s frame design, a particular technological competition took place. The goal was to engineer the most efficient lens changing mechanism. You could fill entire books with the multitude of solutions that were found, from Porsche’s flip-up concept to Cazal’s nose pincher or Alpina’s screw system, to name just the few popular ones. In this absurd arms race, the Fred Ocean with its gullwing brow had the effect of a nuclear bomb. Known as the most over-engineered eyewear design in history, it’s lens-changing mechanism is completely invisible and fully integrated into the brow bar. It features a triple axis construction, with a quick-release lever allowing to remove the lens in one single movement. The lever is blocked in closed position, so the lenses sit just as sturdy as if they were held by fixed rings. It was the heyday of Gullwing doors, they had become the ultimate status symbol thanks to Lamborghini and DeLorean. So when Fred managed to combine form and function in such a perfect way on their Ocean frame, white flags were raised. The engineering competition came to an end. Other lens changing mechanisms remained more practical and popular, but none ever came close to the level of sophistication and elegance of the Fred Ocean.

Frame and lenses in perfect new old stock condition, never worn. Each piece of the frame is stamped with the Fred sigil as a proof of authenticity. Serial number engraved on the bottom of the nose.
When it comes to luxury vintage eyewear, frames made by Fred are in a league of their own. The Fred Force 10 line, combining gold and steel, was created at a time where sailing and water sports were regarded as the thing to do when you made it big. Various eyewear designers started incorporating rope and knot designs to their frames, giving birth to the lines of Cardin Plus, Zollitsch Maritim and most of all, the Fred Force 10.

- Original Fred Ocean clear demo lenses in very good condition, no scratches. Of course, the frame can also be fitted with your choice of prescription or tinted lenses.
- Original Fred Ocean dark brown lenses with 100% UV protection.
- Original Fred Ocean Force 10 case with inserts to store spare lenses. Disclaimer: I recommend using the original case for display and storage purposes only and using the genuine leather case for everyday use. The surface of the case has become sticky with age, the print has worn off, but more annoyingly, the case will leave blue smirks on other surfaces. The smirks can easily be washed off but please handle with care.

The history of the jeweler Fred Joaillier is remarkable. Fred Samuel, the founder, was active in the foreign legion fighting against the nazis in world war 2. He was captured and managed to escape to Paris, where he continued on his work as a jeweler. In December 1941, the Yellow Star was affixed to his storefront, and he was forced to remove the name Samuel from his store. This is how he came to be known as Fred, a name he kept «perhaps out of defiance, perhaps so as not to forget those monstrous hours, perhaps also to maintain the benefit of a salutary anonymity».
In March 1942, he crossed into the free zone, where he was incarcerated twice. In early 1943, with the help of friends, he was released and joined the guerilla resistance group «Maquis Vercors», where he commanded the 17th company in the battle of Montélimar against a German nazi battalion. Having changed his name, Sergeant Soulas, alias Fred Samuel, then accompanied the Liberation Army through the Jura to Vesoul. At the end of September 1944, he returned to Paris and resumed his famous Fred jeweler business.
His clients included Marlene Dietrich, Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford and Grace Kelly. He adorned the high society, including Arab princes. He also worked with artists such as Jean Cocteau and Bernard Buffet. It was he who introduced cultured pearls to France. One of its most beautiful colors, a light pinkish-cream, has since been called the «Fred color». The «Force 10» line, which combines gold and steel, remains one of his best known creations. Fred also designed the necklace of 23 heart-shaped rubies surrounded by diamonds given by Richard Gere to Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.
