Die Geschichte des Juweliers Fred Joaillier ist bemerkenswert. Fred Samuel, der Gründer, war in der Fremdenlegion im Kampf gegen die Nazis im Zweiten Weltkrieg aktiv. Im März 1942 überquerte er die Freie Zone, wo er zweimal inhaftiert wurde. Anfang 1943 wurde er mit Hilfe von Freunden freigelassen und schloss sich der Guerilla-Widerstandsgruppe «Maquis Vercors» an, wo er die 17. Nachdem Sergeant Soulas, alias Fred Samuel, seinen Namen geändert hatte, begleitete er die Befreiungsarmee durch den Jura nach Vesoul. Ende September 1944 kehrte er nach Paris zurück und nahm sein berühmtes Juweliergeschäft Fred wieder auf.
Zu seinen Kunden gehörten Marlene Dietrich, Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford und Grace Kelly. Er schmückte die High Society, darunter auch arabische Fürsten. Er arbeitete auch mit Künstlern wie Jean Cocteau und Bernard Buffet zusammen. Er war es, der die Zuchtperlen nach Frankreich einführte. Eine seiner schönsten Farben, ein helles Rosa-Creme, wird seither als «Fred-Farbe» bezeichnet. Die Linie «Force 10», die Gold und Stahl kombiniert, bleibt eine seiner bekanntesten Kreationen. Fred entwarf auch die Halskette aus 23 herzförmigen Rubinen, die von Diamanten umgeben sind, die Richard Gere Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman gegeben hat.
