Cazal 642 Col 97/624 Vintage Sunglasses – Made in West Germany – Including Cazal Cloth

Made in West Germany in 1989.

New old stock, never worn. No scratches, all inner temple markings are intact.

Including oversized Cazal monogram cleaning cloth and FPOS hardcase.

This is a very rare first series Cazal 642 with ball clips on the bottom and claw clips on top. Another typical sign of recognition of a first series 642 is that the lens rings have shrunk a little over time. To ensure the stability of the rings, this frame has been carefully readjusted and fitted with custom Cazal lenses by none other than the legendary Dameion «Rhythmchild» Williams, originator of the Cazal Phanatics community, designer of the Cazal 656 and Cazal model.

Considered by many collectors as being Cari Zalloni's masterpiece, the Cazal 642 combines the classic shape of the 901 with the temples of the 627 and extremely elegant Windsor lens rings. Creating a perfectly balanced piece of art, Zalloni set a whole new standard with this iconic design.

The history of Cazal is closely intertwined with the history of early Hip Hop fashion. It all started in 1977. The Bronx was burning, and after the blackout, a new fashion phenomenon started to pop up at the block parties: Thick acetate frames, often worn with the demo lenses meant only for store display. They became one of the earliest hallmarks of a new style, a new culture and sense of self that was about to sweap the globe. The Cazal 607, 623, 627 and 642 were originally designed for gentlemen of a certain age. But they found a whole new audience in the streets of Harlem, the Bronx and the Five Boroughs. It was one of the first instances where Hip Hop took a piece of everyday fashion and turned it into something iconic by putting it in a totally different context. Unlike many other companies that got associated with Hip Hop culture and tried to distance themselves, Cari Zalloni embraced this new audience for his designs. He started to take cues from Graffiti and Hip Hop to create new designs. Nine years later, the Cazal 856, 857, 858 and 859 were released as an homage to the style and culture that breathed new life into Zalloni's designs. The history of Cazal and Hip hop fashion went full circle. And until this day, even though a lot of the originators are gone, the beat goes on and on, until the break of dawn.
