This custom Vendôme frame is one of a kind and has only been worn on few occasions. It is in excellent vintage condition. No scratches on the lenses. There are a few stains on the earpieces and a very small gap on the top of the left lens (see photos), but this is not visible when worn and has been reflected on the price.
The 1980s were a time of unlimited freedom and creativity in eyewear. They brought about an incredible diversity of designs, shapes and styles. Some were totally crazy and really hard to wear, some others just set new accents on existing concepts. When it comes to the aviator shape, the Cartier Vendôme created in 1983 started a small revolution with just two slight improvements: For one, it was manufactured by a jeweler and followed much higher production standards than any piece of eyewear created before. The other game changing improvement was as simple as it was efficient: By cutting the upper corners, Cartier created the most iconic aviator shape in eyewear history.
While the Vendôme was available in the Louis Cartier, Santos and Lacquer decors from 1983 to 1987, there were a few notable and more rare variations like the Palladium and Platinum versions. but the rarest and most precious of them all was the high jewelry «Grand Pavage» edition in solid gold crimped with diamonds, which was only made to order.
This breathtaking custom piece adds a contemporary twist to the «Grand Pavage». It was executed with incredible precision and masterful craftsmanship by an Italian jeweler in Padova. Staying true to the original Louis Cartier decor, it is set with a single line of Cubic Zirconia diamonds on the nose bridge and the temples, while the «C» temple ends are fully crimped with Cubic Zirconia diamonds. A true masterpiece, crafted with the utmost attention to detail using Cubic Zirconia of the grade AAAA for the highest clarity and color. Even if it’s a true jewel worthy of a museum, it is meant to be worn, not merely displayed, and should be passed on from generation to generation.
