Seagull Kashab 03 Vintage Glasses – New Old Stock – Handmade in Italy
Made in Italy in the early 1990s.
New unworn deadstock. Frame in pristine condition, all inner temple markings intact. There are some removable stains from age on the silver, can be cleaned with mild polish.
A very well made vintage Cartier bootleg, the Seagull Kashab 03 combines a Cartier Tank front with temples inspired by the Cartier Bagatelle or Giverny. Adding a freaky twist with the signature seagull logo on the temple bar. Very nicely executed, flexible temples, quality silver metal and wood, beautiful craftsmanship.
Original demo lenses with Seagull logo. Can be worn as is or fitted with your choice of prescription or tinted lenses.
A bootleg is a unique piece, illegally using high fashion logos to create an original design. Bootlegs originated in the early 1980s in New York City and marked the very beginning of streetwear. They were sold on the corner, and meant to be worn on the streets, far from catwalks and posh boutiques.
In the early days of Hip Hop culture, a few people in the Bronx and Harlem took fashion design into their own hands. They liked the logos and the appeal of labels like Gucci, Vuitton, Chanel or MCM, but they didn’t want to wear high fashion pieces, nor could they afford them. So, they created their own unauthorized sweaters, jackets and shirts displaying huge logos of high fashion brands. Most notably, Harlem’s Dapper Dan designed extravagant tracksuits and jackets bearing the monograms of Gucci, MCM and Louis Vuitton. The more basic sweaters and t-shirts were made on the spot in small series and sold on parking lots. As these garments were made without any permission from the concerned labels, many lawsuits and busts ensued, the items being illegal.
But Is a bootleg a copy? In fact, it’s not. It’s an original design. Is a bootleg a fake? Well, it was certainly not made by Gucci or Vuitton. But what’s more real and authentic than a product designed on the streets, for the streets? The same streets that these fashion houses take their inspiration from. So much so that many years later, in 2017, Gucci started copying the bootlegs, and even collaborating with Dapper Dan.
As the story goes full circle, Hip Hop culture and fashion will continue to sample, to cut and combine, creating new things from the old.
